Ok. Defense has mitigated the damage to a 10 point deficit. This is an improvement from last year. Last year, this was a 20 point game by half that the offense would bring to a 10 point game. The shooters need to get into a rhythm. Shaw hasn't had a clean 3, neither has Schweiger, but the drive and shoot was effective to close out the half. Hopefully the locker room gets something going similar to the SMWC game. All hope isnt lost yet. Frankly, this defense is lights out so far. Hopefully they continue to force Liberty to take difficult shots. The main issue being, those difficult shots are falling.
Schmidt is playing like he really wants it. We're down because we can't hit any 3s. Hopefully Cooper can click into gear in the 2nd half
@valpofan Agreed. Schmidt is playing exactly like a hometown kid should. The bench is also very involved with the on court processes. Frankly, they are the biggest Valpo fans at the moment. Powell's fast break style is a double edge sword. One one hand it can catch teams off guard and make them loose focus. However, there is a fine line between fast paced, and frantic playstyle. The guys need to make sure they stay in the fast rather than the frantic
We’re gonna come back and win 80-78. Book it or maybe I’m just “ill”.Schwieger goes off for 20 in the 2nd half , Darius turns into Kobe and the Drew family’s strong Christian connection allows God to bestow his grace upon us….
this is starting to get painful
Do these guys know they can pass the ball? Selfish basketball, gonna be a very long season if we look like this in our upcoming games….
Its just the story of a team hitting their 3s and a team not being able to get anything to fall. A lot of these 3s are heavily contested, and yet, they are falling. Valpo is getting open looks, but isnt able to get the 3s to fall. Also Frantic vs fast basketball. 1 other point to note. Whenever Schwieger goes into the game. Liberty brings in 2 bigs that match Schwieger in height and look to overtake him in weight. He is then doubled in the paint by these 2 bigs.
it's not fair that liberty has all these guys who can shoot the 3- how do they find them all?!
We have no interior defense (Shocking! We didn't last year and then we didn't add any impact centers). As a result, the other team can regularly pound the ball inside and get a relatively easy attempt. Our half court offense is limited without any shooters, and we have long stretches with no off ball movement. We have to rely on transition to score, but get out in transition you need clean rebounds or steals which we can't get because we dont have an interior defender.
Liberty is a very good team and there is no shame in losing them at this stage of our rebuild, but I am frustrated that we couldn't find a center that would get minutes or a reliable deep threat. We'll see if anybody fills those roles as the season goes on.
@vok22 I thought Scroggins was supposed to be a good rim protector- is he injured?
Starting to get laughable , does Shaw have a green light just cuz he’s in the family ? We’ll get better , but this is not a team. If Bryce or Homer were coaching half of these shots would never be allowed to be put up. Powell trying to run an NBA style offense without the cast…
@valpofan I was hoping so too. I even remember one report last year that he was “dominant” on defense in practice. Powell said he has a ton of potential in an interview last week. He played a few minutes in the exhibition and none today. Must not be ready.
- McNair is very stupid and freshman like so far …

Right. No shame in loosing here at all. You get a good game, against a strong team, and then get to hit the books in practice to pound out those issues in practice. Interior defense was effective in the opening 5. But the team seems to have gotten in their own heads and as a result, many miscues are made. Liberty was a threat in the Asun for many years and was able to get a 7-9 record in their first run at C-USA. Liberty is a strong 3 point shooting team, in the first half, the defense was able to execute and force Liberty to take contested shots. Problem is, Liberty was able to make said contested shots.
OK swim, lets not get too angry at freshman, think about the context of the situation here... he has no cbb experience, and the pressure of the situation can leave you frantic.
