Quote from: vu72 on March 18, 2013, 09:25:58 AMGreat research!  I'm sure the coaches read this forum all the time and will get Erik to look at it long and hard!  Seriously, I doubt Appling has seen a defender as quick as Erik.  If we run we can negate some of their size advantage.  It will be an interesting coaching choice:  Play Bobby to try and match size or play Ben more for another outside shot and faster lineup.  My guess is we'll see Erik, LaVonte/Will, Ryan, Matt and Kevin a lot with Bobby getting playing time to spell Kevin or if Kevin gets into foul trouble.

He played in the B1G and as much as I love Buggs, Burke is better than Erik, and Appling also played that really good team down in Coral Gables.

Valpo Basketball / Re: March Madness A to Z

Well after seeing the clip of "The Shot" every year since it's happened I know they wore their Gold unis in round 1.

Looking at the cheerleader in the background she looks like she could be in Seminole colors and the sign on the right looks like it could be one of those NCAA banners on the scorers table.

They play quarters in CUSA? That's odd.

And barely, at that!

Odd phrasing.  "With 10 minutes to play" would have been more common for CBB. ;)

I saw a couple small signs on the shops on Lincolnway, but not too much. Kind of disappointing.

Let's not forget the C-USA. They only have two teams, Memphis and Southern Miss, that would finish ahead of us. Their 3rd and 4th place teams (UTEP and UCF) would both most likely be behind us on the S curve. So this is also a conference tournament to pay attention to.

Good!  Memphis was undefeated in conference, but so was Norfolk State (OK - not a _very_ close analogy, but...).

Southern Miss is playing now (up 50-41 at almost the end of the 3rd quarter), Memphis plays in the quarterfinals tonight.

They play quarters in CUSA? That's odd.

Sports Talk / NCAA Tournament Pick'em

So I do a bracket every year.  Thought I'd open it up to anyone on here who wanted to join.  I'm sure you'll fill out at least one bracket, why not do it here? If this doesn't belong in the OT Sports Talk someone can move it to the right spot.

68-62 Valpo. God I hope I'm wrong and it's a blow out.  If we get up by 10, I will consider the game over.

Does anyone else think that regardless of outcome, their coach will be a hot commodity this summer?  Taking a team that was 'supposed' to finish last to a third place regular season finish, and the HL tourney championship game can get you some looks.

I saw on the WSU board that they think we will lose Bryce this year.  I think that with this solid recruiting class coming in, he will want to see how it plays out after a few seasons more.

Bryce isn't leaving unless a bluechip job comes and offers him Calipari like money, and that job isn't coming.

I like to compare Rowdy to a poor mans Kyle Korver with better defense. Now will that defense hold up in the NBA, I doubt it.

Quote from: truth219 on March 12, 2013, 12:57:46 PMThis is just something I've thought about and I know its impossible, but if a new arc was built off campus would that increase attendance. For instance, by where the newer holiday inn express is by 49. Sometimes I wonder if turn out is poor because people simply don't know where the arc is. That may sound dumb but I'm sure its possible.

Then the students wouldn't show... nope can't use that argument I guess.

Quote from: FWalum on March 12, 2013, 11:13:49 AMHas Bryce been T'd up yet as head coach?  Homer use to pick his spots and get the occasional T when it was needed.  I have thought a couple of times this year that Bryce could a should a gotten one to pump up the team.  The first Loyola game comes to mind.

The first Detroit game also comes to mind. I don't remember him being T'd this year.

Quote from: valporun on March 12, 2013, 10:22:35 AMI heard from alums, on Facebook, who were Hall of Froth members that Pass Times is now called "Stacks", with more of a library theme, so I'm guessing really quiet, people studying/reading, with legal pads or laptops all over getting work done with their "library cards" of beer drinking being tagged?

I've been there a few times and really like it.  It's kind of quiet but there's not people reading or studying.  The walls are covered in books and there's those little library ladders.  The "Library Card" is a list of 50 beers that you can drink to join the Hall of Froth.  I think it's still called the hall of froth and they have the Passtimes list up, but I haven't checked since I wasn't a Hall member.

Quote from: LaPorteAveApostle on March 12, 2013, 10:39:08 AM
dumb...then just call it "the library", as in, "sorry, mom and dad, call you later, gotta go back to The Library"

I think it's a clever name.

The Valpo "pod" according to Lunardi (ESPN):

(San Jose)
13 Valparaiso
4 Oklahoma State

12 Temple
5 Pittsburgh

The Valpo "pod" according to Jerry Palm (CBS):

(Dayton)
14 Valparaiso
3 Florida

11 Oklahoma
6 VCU

Lunardi has some odd ones still...like that he moved Wisconsin back to the #4 line despite their loss this week to Purdue, in Madison and a drubbing at Michigan State. Palm has the Badgers at a #7, which seems closer (I am a Wisconsin fan as well, and I think they are probably a #6 right now).

Also, don't put too much stock into the difference between a #13 and #14...the committee has the leeway to move a team up or down a line to fit their other bracket rules (rematches, conference, teams close to home, etc.), so its entirely possible that one of these guys may have done this to make their bracket "work" within the rules.

I want the Dayton pod selfishly so a ton of VU people can travel to the games.  San Jose would suck.

I thought it was interesting but I didn't watch it. I watched a little bit on the MLB network but I kept thinking "ESPN is losing a ton of viewers right now.

Just looking at the replay, the clock didn't start until Ryan touched the ball.  That said it was 1.2 seconds when Ryan released the ball, so it was all good regardless.

For anyone interested there's going to be a "tweetup" Tuesday at Figure 8. If you don't know where Figure 8 is its on Indiana between Washington and Franklin, right next door to Greek's Pizza and a block north of Valpo Velvet. If you don't know where either of those are, you're in trouble.

We'll be meeting up at 6:30, and I'll be at the big table so we can have as many as we want there.

For the under 21 crowd, or those who don't want to be written about in the torch, they have their own root beer served in large steins.

That's clever.  They did a terrible job at getting the cheerleader uniforms right, but it's entertaining.

Honestly I would rather play UWGB but I think UIC will have some home court advantage and pull off the win.

Quote from: bbtds on March 06, 2013, 11:24:34 PMmany on this board said they wouldn't get any B1G wins at all or maybe 1 or 2.

I'd have been one of those.  I'm glad I was wrong...

...but that still doesn't mean A) they are any good and B) we should have lost that game.

I agree with all points...They're still not good, and Valpo should not have lost.

Yeah but now the loss doesn't look AS bad...

Quote from: Goraiders93 on March 06, 2013, 01:59:32 PMDo you all know if they'll be selling tickets game day Saturday at the ARC or would it be easier just to have them at will call?

I would go will call so you can secure a better seat.
