More Horizon disappointments.  CSU goes down to a decent Eastern Illinois team, 67-65.  Meanwhile, Detroit is losing by 28 to ASU with the Horizon League's leading scorer having made 2 pts in the first half.  BTW, ASU lost their last game to Lehigh.  I like our chances for a conference championship more and more.

I have come to the conclusion that it's pointless to spend any time thinking about conference RPI, multiple bids, and tournament seeding as long as we continue to be dragged down by programs that need better coaching and/or recruiting. The HL is much more a "co-op of convenience" than it is a conference of like-minded athletic programs with everyone pulling their load.

Let me think... I believe this was an exact quote coming out of Cleveland State's staff... about a certain Valpo team explaining their exit...circa 1990...   The tide swings in all directions...

HC

Wright State just got done losing at home.

Detroit lost by 39.  That is embarrassing on its face.  Chicago State only lost to this team by 35.  Ugh.  Where is the titan fan now??

What is crazy is that Detroit, on its surface, is a talented team.  When digging deeper it appears that once again the coaches can't get them on the same page.

On the plus side, I'm now really looking forward to my annual wrap-up of the non-con season.

(Terrible teams make better comedic material than good ones.)

oh man.  dated but still somewhat good, like old chocolate-covered pretzels you find on your car floor.

(purely a hypothetical there.)

Looks like the HL very well could go 0-5 over the weekend as the league continues to stagger into conference play:

Sat.:
#21 Ohio State over Wright State (won't be close)
#15 Maryland over Oakland (ditto)
Georgia State over Green Bay (should be closer than the 72-48 butt whipping GB took @ GSU on 12/4, but not close enough.  GS's 3 losses are to teams with a combined record of 30-2)  (Interestingly, GB is favored by 5)

Sun.:
South Dakota over Milwaukee (bad team over a team that looks like it will continue to struggle for wins)
Bradley over UIC (pretty bad team over a very bad team)

#21 Ohio State over Wright State (won't be close) L Worst loss in Wright State history
#15 Maryland over Oakland (ditto)  L but a defeat that will help them prepare for the HL like all the others defeats....???

Sun.:
South Dakota over Milwaukee (bad team over a team that looks like it will continue to struggle for wins) is a 3 point under dog.
Bradley over UIC (pretty bad team over a very bad team)  is a 8.5 point under dog.

This game wasn't on the internet any where but I noticed Milwaukee lost to South Dakota 84-60.

BTW, USD lost 3 OT games this season, in one OT to Fairfield by 8, in 2 OT to Creighton by 3 and in 3 OT to Sam Houston St by 8.
They've beaten both Montana, by 5, and Montana St by 2.

UIC is hanging with Bradley so far 15-15 with 9 minutes to go in the 1st half.

EDIT: Bradley wins 68-60 over UIC.

They're the same team we dominated when Brown was injured last year.  They are who we thought they were...

Dennis Green They Are Who We Thought They Were

The only thing we know at this point:

1) Is that we can't crown anyone.
2) Only UIC and Milw would be certain to NOT be crowned.

I haven't seen anything overly impressive from the other 7 teams to make me think anyone is any better than the rest.

Finally, I do think this year will have the messiest tie breaker ever.

Jay Harris goes for 25, including 13 for 13 from the FT line as UIC takes down YSU 77-71!

13 for 13 but still 11 less free throws than what Felder shot against Valpo. I don't think I would have believed it unless I saw it (well, at least most of it) myself.

Portland with an early lead but the rest look final or decided and most went well. Only opponent losses by James Madison, Oakland and YSU. Nice wins by IPFW and Missouri!

So... watching the Nolan RPI update during the game tonight... we started at 84... within minutes of the ETSU and Missouri Wins, we had jumped to 79... then Oakland, Youngstown and James Madison went fine... and we slipped to 82.  Now, pending the Portland game (up 7 with 15:00 to play), we sit at ... 84.... right where we started.

Wonder how Felder was only able to shoot 6 FTs against the CSU Vikings after shooting 24 FTs against Valpo. Did Kahlil suddenly forget how to get to the free throw line? I have a feeling the refs were much more aware of Felder driving into trouble and not bailing him out with foul calls. They most likely let the action happen and Felder couldn't make that many shots from the floor. CSU also plays really good defense.

With only 6 FTs Felder had 14 points instead of 32.

I watched the Oakland at CSU replay just to see if Felder's play was different in that game. Within 1:15 of the opening tip Felder was called for not moving the ball on offense for 5 seconds. Great D by Charlie Lee. At 16:00 Felder threw up a three and fell backwards but the refs didn't give him the call like was given to Felder when Tevonn Walker was called for a foul. It was just tough D by Charlie Lee. By 14:56 Oakland had missed 7 shots and were losing 7-0. As you can see the game did not go nearly as well for the Grizzlies as it did at home for Oakland against Valpo.

No movement in the RPI is great news after you get done playing UIC at home....AKA an RPI killer no matter what the result.  Thank god our OOC opponents went 6-1 tonight to offset the damage of having to play them.

Speaking of our OOC opponents, Murray State has won 10 consecutive games since their 93-58 loss to us on Nov. 29th.  They are now 12-4 for the season.
