As of December 31st, bus service serving NWI to the Chicago airports will be shut down. My son is a current student at Valpo and has always caught the bus from Portage to O'Hare. Besides using the expensive option of Uber/Lyft  to get back to Valpo for the spring semester in January, does anyone know of less expensive or more convenient options? I am not from the area. Thanks in advance!

If you're a traveller...

Orange Line from Midway to the Loop.  (during the day, I get out at Roosevelt Road and walk the two blocks to the 11th street South Shore Station); alternately, take it all the way around the loop to the Washington St stop, down the stairs a one block to Millenium Park South Shore Station...   From the train, get off at Dune Park (Chesterton) and there will be a "Valpo VLine Connect" shuttle bus that will take you to (A) Campus by Beacon Hall or (B) downtown at the bus terminal area.  Total cost is about $11.

25 minutes on the RTA, about an hour on the train and 20 minutes on the shuttle.

Warning:  There are LOTS of stairs on this option, so a heavy suitcase may be problematic.

Midway is the ORANGE line  (1+ block from Millenium Park)
Ohare is the BLUE Line. (about 4-5 blocks from Millenium Park)

As someone who has used both the train and bus methods. I would always ask all my friends/ acquaintances that lived around O'Hare or past it (Wisconsin) and offered 20-30 for gas. People were always very accommodating it usually worked out.

Costs are currently $9.00 on South shore train from Millennium Station to the Dune Park station same for the reverse. Valpo Vline Connect bus is $1.00. The CTA train, Orange or Blue line, is $3.00 if you buy a paper ticket from the vending machine. If you go often you might think about purchasing a CTA Ventra card which is $5.00 for the card and a minimum amount added to the card, I believe it may be $5.00 also. Each ride on the CTA trains is $2.50 with the Ventra card except the rides originating at O'Hare. I think there is a $3.00 fee added at O'Hare.
