NYT (5-03)issued a report from the Nat'l Assoc. for College Admissions (NACAC) that a large number of college are still seeking students for the 2012-13 school year. One of the schools listed is Valpo. The VU person to contact is David Fevig. Q: Are we in trouble, enrollment wise, for the next school year?

agibson

In an NYT blog post
http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/03/nacac-space-availability-survey/

with the survey results (and Valpo's name, among dozens and dozens of others; nine in Indiana alone) at
http://www.nacacnet.org/research/research-data/SpaceSurvey/Pages/SpaceSurveyResults.aspx

Valpo's long had a rolling admission policy, right?  I don't think there was any May 1 deadline for our students.

So, I think our appearance in this survey just reflects this fact.

Because the May 1 deadline applies at many other schools, I expect that most of our entering class has decided, by now.  And has already deposited, or will soon.

From what I've heard our numbers look OK - no particular reason for concern.  I've not heard anything since the May 1 "deadline".

And this is the (rather new?) Dean of Undergraduate Admission.

he's not that new. been around since at least my junior year. okinawa might know how long he's been there.

Dave has been around for at least 5 years I think, but his title is only about two years old. we do have a new VP for Enrollment that has been there for about a year now.

Ah, probably I'm confusing the two.

I thought Dave had been around a lot longer than 5 years? Maybe he's been in the position he's in for about that long, but I thought he'd been there at least a decade or more, since he had a daughter that went to VU, Sarah, who was a 2003 grad.

I agree with you, valporun. My daughters were Valpo students beginning in 1999, and he was working in admissions or financial aid dept. back then, as I recall a meeting with him at one point.

Just got word from a person in admissions who told me that at the moment, deposit wise, we are about 50 a head of last year.  this includes transfers.  The total new student number for undergrad should be about 925.  The rolling admission thing keeps the window open so a student can actually decide to come on the last day before classes start, provided there is an open bed.

So on balance things look good but the growth objective looks like it will take some time.

In a post I wrote back in March I passed along that I had been told to expect a spike in this year's enrollment. The information from vu72 coincides with what I have heard recently. The optimistic outlook for now is about 50 more undergraduates and 50 more graduate students, which would place the enrollment back near or just above the 2010-2011 level (2872 undergraduates, 1184 graduate students, 4056 total) since we lost almost a hundred students in this past year's enrollment (2827 undergraduates, 1137 graduate students, 3964 total for 2011-12). Considering the current state of the economy, this is very good news.

What was the target year for reaching 6,000 students?     Can't recall

agibson

I too lose track.  It was a five-year goal.  Was 2011-2012 the first entering class?  Or 2010-2011?

But, it sounds like "five years" is their primary planning horizon.  So, I think it's still a five year goal.  Five years from now.

I have seen the enrollment numbers for the fall as they stand right now, and I'm pleased to say that the University appears poised to have a record level of incoming undergraduate students (freshmen and transfers), perhaps the 925 vu72 reported, which would be 135 more than last year. In addition, the profile of SAT scores for the incoming freshmen indicates the new class will be slightly higher academically than last year's class. There also will be a significant increase of graduate students. Good news all around.

I can pass on that the latest data for incoming students this fall seem to assure some record numbers, and the indicators are much more optimistic about enrollment figures, even higher than those from a month ago, plus there are expectations of more enrollments during the summer. Admissions appears to have done an excellent job!

As an example of the "rolling enrollment" issue, since the last update  posted here by valpopal on May 16, we have added 48 students who are athletes.  These were announced on the various sports news releases and could only be made after deposits and paperwork was complete and couldn't be included in previous numbers unless they were "estimating" whether or not these student/athletes would finally decide on Valpo.  I presume we will be adding students right up to the start of classes which makes a final enrollment number difficult.

Sounds like the three tennis recruits have some talent. One went to a tennis academy in Florida, the other won over 20 singles matches and a senior award. The third was a WI state runner up as a senior. I know nothing about this but it sounds like Valpo has made a concerted effort to get better or the dismissal of Freeman lit a fire under some "other" coaches.

Sorry for bleeding the enrollment thread into a tennis thread.

I just received word from a very reliable source that the freshman number will slightly exceed 800, which will make it the largest class "in decades", with slightly more than 200 transfers as well.  They are "constantly" receiving applications.  Sounds like things are starting to heat up!!

I have seen recent official numbers, and I will merely say that your "source" seems indeed to be "reliable."  ;)

I think it is interesting to note an oddity in the stats for this year's incoming undergraduates: for the first time in many years, males outnumber females and by a pretty significant percentage.

vu72

Here's an article from yesterday's Post-Trib which says the incoming class is the largest in 30 years and, includes about 25% international and minority students.

Since information is in the newspaper, I guess I can go ahead and report that the actual number of minority and international students is 28%, which is 33% higher than last year.

That's cool.  They'll have to inch that up to 1500 a year to get to the 6,000 goal, but it's  a good start.
